What Happens After Reiki? How the Nervous System Finds Calm after Reiki.

Most people, after they experience Reiki, feel a profound lightness.

Like their body has been gently lifted, almost as if it’s being recalibrated on a deep level. In that moment, you may sense a wave of calm, a subtle easing of tension, or even an emotional release.

This is your nervous system, taking a deep exhale.

As Reiki works, it nudges the nervous system out of its fight-or-flight response and into a state of relaxation. The vagus nerve, a key player in this shift, begins to activate, signaling your body that it is safe to rest. The relaxation response can bring about several noticeable changes:

  • Decreased heart rate

  • Lowered blood pressure

  • Reduced cortisol levels

  • Greater sense of emotional balance

  • Increased mental clarity

In fact, scientific research supports this.

Practices like mindfulness, slow breathing, and other relaxation techniques boost what’s called vagal tone; often measured by heart rate variability. These shifts are linked to lower cortisol levels, reduced anxiety, and a stronger sense of safety and balance in the body.

After your session, you can integrate this calm by practicing mindful breathing, journaling, or gentle movement, tuning into the small but powerful shifts in your body and mind.

If you feel called to explore this more deeply, you can contact me for a personal Reiki session. I’d love to support you on your journey.
